Position Description: | The Department of Physics and Astronomy seeks a high energy particle physicist with involvement in space-based experiments. This is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2024. Duties of the position include: (1) establishing an active research program in experimental space-based particle physics, (2) teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels; and (3) service to the departmental, collegiate, and/or scientific community. The successful applicant’s research program should include the pursuit of external funding for instrumentation R&D, construction, operation and analysis of experiments, and education of students and postdoctoral researchers. The ideal candidate will develop an active program in detector development and physics analysis that overlaps in the Neutrino, Cosmic, or Instrumentation Frontiers outlined by the recent Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (“Snowmass”) and/or is synergistic with research efforts currently in our department. However, research programs in all areas of experimental particle physics will be considered. The Department of Physics and Astronomy maintains state-of-the-art core facilities to enable faculty research. These include a modern machine shop staffed by three machinists, an electronics assembly center staffed by a NASA-certified technician, in-house quality assurance services, and extensive in-house test capability including vibration, thermal vacuum, and EMI/EMC facilities. In addition, a shared spaceflight hardware assembly, integration, and test facility is currently under construction on the top floor of the Van Allen physics building. Department facilities have been extensively used for the development of satellite missions, including the $120 million NASA TRACERS program, as well as numerous detector design and construction projects in the collider-based particle physics program. More information about research efforts at Iowa can be found at https://physics.uiowa.edu/research . APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Interested applicants should apply at http://jobs.uiowa.edu/ and refer to requisition #74884. The application must include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae (preferably with external funding history), research statement, teaching statement, and the names and contact information of three references. Upon submission, references will be notified by e-mail with directions on how to electronically submit letters to the University of Iowa. Informal inquiries can be directed to jane-nachtman@uiowa.edu, with the subject line “Experimental Particle Physics Faculty Search.” Applications should arrive prior to November 28, 2023 to receive full consideration. The Department and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are strongly committed to diversity; the strategic plans of the University and College reflect this commitment. Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check. The University of Iowa is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment free from discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, pregnancy (including childbirth and related conditions), disability, genetic information, status as a U.S. veteran, service in the U.S. military, sexual orientation, gender identity, or associational preferences.
